House Remodeling That Pays Off for 2017

By / Bathroom Remodel, Home Improvement, Kitchen Remodel / Comments Off on House Remodeling That Pays Off for 2017

One of the biggest questions people have about house remodeling is “Will it pay off?”.  When you spend money on a house remodel, be it a kitchen or bath remodel or addition you want to know you are increasing the value of your property.  Remodeling has released the 2017 Pacific regional cost versus value for remodeling and the news is good; very good.

Kitchen Remodeling

The average cost of a major kitchen remodel in the Pacific region is $69,723 with a recoup estimate of $52,377.  That means you realize of a gain of 75% of the amount of the remodel.  That is higher than 2016.  It means 2017 is a great time for house remodeling if you want to maximize your return on investment.

Inspired Remodels can turn your current kitchen into your dream kitchen with custom cabinets, new finishes, and improved lighting.  If you plan on staying in your home, you’ll have years of enjoyable cooking and entertaining and know you’ve added 75% value of the cost.

If you plan on selling your home or aren’t ready for a major remodel, the news is even better.  A minor remodel is $23,695 and returns $22,711 in value.  That means you recoup almost 96% of the cost.  Buyers look for fresh kitchens and a minor kitchen remodel just might be what gets your home noticed and sold quickly.

Bathroom remodeling is also estimated to add 75 cents of value for each dollar spent.  A bathroom remodel in the Pacific region is estimated at $21,635 and adds $16,206 in value.  While that is down from 2016, it is still a great return on the investment.

Don’t overlook the bathroom when remodeling the house.  A good bathroom is functional. A great bathroom is comfortable.  An awesome bathroom is functional, comfortable, and your own personal in-home spa.

Maximum Return from House Remodeling

The 2017 house remodeling projects with the greatest return for the Pacific region are entry door replacements and the addition of attic insulation.  Attic insulation only run $1,406 but returns $1,726 in value.  That’s a 122.8% return and while it is down from 2016 it is still great.  In addition, both attic insulation and new entry doors can make your home more energy efficient.

Speaking of entry doors, the house remodeling project with the 2nd greatest return in value is replacing your entry doors.  The cost is $1,516 and the value added is $1,535.  It is a quick remodeling job and not only increases your home’s value it increases curb appeal.  It might be just the ticket if you plan on selling in 2017.

How to Hire a Home Improvement Contractor

By / Home Improvement / Comments Off on How to Hire a Home Improvement Contractor

So, the thought of a new year has you thinking about a new kitchen or bath?  Maybe you want new stairs, flooring or need a way to give a tired room a lift.  Unless you are skilled carpenter, electrician, or plumber hire a home improvement contractor for these jobs.  But hiring a home improvement contractor can be scary. A major renovation, remodel, or re-do is a major investment and you don’t want to get burned.  How do you find the right contractor for the job?

Only Hire a Licensed Home Improvement Contractor

This is first, foremost, and always the most important.  Do not hire a home improvement contractor that is not licensed.  The State of California makes this easy.  Just go online to the state’s Contractor’s License Board and search by the company name.  For example, enter Inspired Remodels as the name of the home improvement contractor and you get information such as:

  • Business address and phone
  • License status
  • Business classification
  • Bonding information
  • Worker’s compensation insurance information

Get Bids

Shop around and get at least 3 bids for a major renovation or remodel.  When you compare bids, make sure that all three are based on the same plans, specifications, and finishes.  That low bid for a kitchen remodel may include fiberboard cabinets while the more expensive bid may install solid wood or custom cabinets.  If one bid is so low you can’t believe it; then don’t. There is either a problem with the bid or the contractor.  Most home improvement contractors charge the same for comparable work.

Ask for Recommendations

IMG_2204

Ask the contractor for recommendations from recent clients.  Then call the clients.  Ask about their experience.  Was the work finished on time and on budget?  Were there any surprises?  In what condition was the home left at the end of the work day?

Some contractors view your home as nothing more than a job site.  Inspired Remodels understands the place they are working is your home.  It is stressful and inconvenient to have your home under construction. That’s why you will always be assigned a project manager to serve as the point of contact for all aspects of your job.  In addition, our crews will never leave your home a shambles at the end of the day.

Ask your friends, neighbors, an co-workers if they have any experiences (good or bad) with a local home improvement contractor.  Also, ask to see work that they have done.  They should have a portfolio of kitchen remodels, flooring or fireplace remodels, or samples of similar work.
